Day 7 ~ Wines and Wheels

In honor of all the amazing fathers out there, the entire class attended the annual Wine & Wheels event at Schmidt Family Vineyards. Everyone got to enjoy the beautiful grounds while admiring all the classic cars. Since it was an open-to-the-public event, all the future graduates had the opportunity to practice introducing themselves to strangers and answering any questions that they may have.

Everyone had a blast enjoying some great food, wine, and company. We even got to pick our favorite car to win the "Angels Choice Award." It was such a wonderful way to spend the day.                                                                                                                                                                 Thank you to Bob and Chris Meneely and RCM Classic Car Repair for once again hosting this fabulous event benefiting Canine Angels. Your continued support means so much. Thank you for joining us in changing the lives of kids and young adults with disabilities!                                                                                                             Raffle Ticket Winners:

Day 6 ~ YMCA, Grange Co-op & The Haul

Today was a day packed full of field trips. First it was off to the Grants Pass Family YMCA for a grooming lecture graciously given by Cheryl Bright of Cheryl's Mobile Grooming. After learning some much needed tips of how to keep their future pups fresh and healthy, everyone popped over into to help out with the YMCA's Sensory Gym event catered to kids with sensory sensitivities. The kids got a chance to run around and play. The bouncy house was a big hit.

Next we went to the Grange Co-op to stock up on some much needed supplies and practice handling the dogs in a location with lots of distracting smells, sounds and animals.

After finishing up our shopping we all went and treated ourselves to lunch at The Haul. Fitting 12 dogs and their people in a restaurant on a busy Saturday afternoon is not an easy task, but everyone did great. To finish out the day we went back to the building to have a lecture on maintaining health and then learned how to play the back and forth game with the dogs. This game is important to learn and practice regularly because it can be later be adapted into the get help command if needed. Plus it's super fun and the whole family can get involved. Overall it was a fantastic day and everyone learned a lot.

Day 5 ~ Preparing for the Weekend

Day 5 was eagerly anticipated by all those in attendance. Today it was revealed which pup was going to each family to spend the weekend together.

The look on your face when you've been pranked & given a dog you barely know.
The relief that comes when you realize you've been pranked.

Afterwards, it was time to let the dogs run off some steam in the play yard. The handlers weren't let off the hook, however, while the dogs were having a grand old time, it was the peoples' jobs to evaluate the pack's behavior and identify the alpha female and alpha male.

After that  the participants had the opportunity to learn how to safely load and unload the pups from their vehicles. It was then time for students  go back to their hotels to put into practice everything they've learned over the past 5 days.

Day 4 ~ Dogs and Dutch Bros

Today everyone worked with the dogs and learned some new commands - under, follow, back, down stay, heel and swing. They continued to practice sit, down, bed, up, jump and shake as the dogs and the people get more  and more comfortable working together.

The staff were given a bit of a break today when the class pottied the dogs themselves. It may not be glamorous, but it needs to get done.

Then we went on our second field trip. We were fortunate to get a tour of Dutch Bros headquarters where we learned about the company philosophy, toured the facilities, and were educated about how the beans are harvested and roasted for use. The end of the tour culminated in a much appreciated free cup of our favorite menu item. Hats off to Dutch Bros for another great outing!
